HYPOTHYROID AND MISCARRIAGE

Thyroid Gland Must Function Properly To Avoid Miscarriage

I've written many times about the fertility and thyroid connection. Here is an article about how hypothyroidism may be a contributor to recurrent pregnancy loss:

Absence of thyroid hormones essential for the growth and metabolism of the foetus has a significant relationship with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) in the first trimester, a study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Sciences has said.

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) can be defined as three or more consecutive spontaneous pregnancy losses before 20 weeks of gestation period.

The research was conducted on 163 non-pregnant healthy women, who had had two or more spontaneous consecutive first trimester pregnancy losses, with 170 healthy women without a history of abortion as a control group.

The results indicated that hypothyroidism was found in 4.12 per cent women with RPL while the deficiency was found only in 0.5 per cent of the women comprising the control group, who had no history of abortion.

"If an expectant mother suffers from hypothyroidism, she does not have sufficient hormones needed for growth and development of her foetus and has a greater chance of suffering a miscarriage," the study said.
