PROGESTERONE LEVELS ASSOCIATED WITH MISCARRIAGE

Miscarriage more likely with low progesterone

I recently wrote on my infertility-fertility blog about how stress may cause progesterone deficiencies.  Progesterone levels are an important indicator for the health of a pregnancy.  Whether caused by stress or whether your progesterone levels are just naturally low, it can be a reason some women are more likely to miscarry.  This interesting article talks about how monitoring progesterone levels early in pregnancy can be a quick and apparently accurate way of assessing pregnancy risk.  Read more:

In the new study, Ioannis Gallos of the University of Birmingham in England and colleagues analyzed information from 26 previous studies involving 9,436 women who were less than 14 weeks pregnant  and had experienced abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding. About 2,300 women had an inconclusive ultrasound, while the rest had not undergone an ultrasound.

Among women who had an ultrasound, 73 percent had nonviable pregnancies. But among women with progesterone levels below 3 to 6 nanograms per milliliter, the probability of a nonviable pregnancy rose to more than 99 percent.
Among women who did not have ultrasounds, 96 percent of those with progesterone levels below 10 ng/mL had a nonviable pregnancy, while the same was true of 37 percent of those with higher progesterone levels

CAN ENDOMETRIOSIS CAUSE PREGANCY LOSS?

PREGNANCY LOSS DUE TO ENDOMETROSIS

Endometriosis can be a painful and difficult problem whether or not you are trying to conceive. It tends to get worse over time because small pieces of the endometrium (uterine lining) can implant outside the uterus causing monthly bleeding in the wrong places. This bleeding leads to scar tissue, adhesions and can be accompanied by pain, abnormal bleeding, and the list goes on. I've known a

number of women who would miss a couple days of school or work every month because of the horrible pain associated with their endometriosis. Having said that, many women have endometriosis and don't even know it. I was one of these cases. I did not have pain with my endometriosis, and it was found (and removed) during a laparoscopy. So, why can endometriosis cause miscarriage? Endometriosis can throw your cycle off it's normal pattern. If you should have a very early pregnancy, your body may get the wrong signals and shed your uterine lining too early causing an early miscarriage...

IMPLANTATION TIMING CAN CAUSE MISCARRIAGE

Delayed Implantation Could Lead To Miscarriage

I've always thought there's quite a bit of luck and timing involved with having a healthy successful pregnancy.
This article discusses how timing is critcal.  Getting pregnant is an orchestration of events where everything has to happen on cue.  If the egg implants too late, the uterine lining may be starting to shed.  Or perhaps eggs that implant late may be defective in some way.  this article explains more:

Eggs are usually fertilised in the fallopian tubes and then travel to the uterus, where they embed themselves to grow.

scientists found.

But if implantation occurred on the tenth day, the risk increased to 26%. On the eleventh day, it rose to 52%.

Any later and the risk of miscarriage was 82%.

However, the researchers could not explain why eggs that attach later are more likely to miscarry.

Possible defects

Publishing their findings in the New England Journal of Medicine, they suggested eggs that take a long time to implant are defective in some way, and would be unlikely to last a full pregnancy.

"The uterus may be receptive to pregnancy only during a limited time-window, shutting out defective embryos that get there too late," they said.

PROLONGED STANDING IN PREGNANCY MAY HURT FETAL GROWTH

Standing at work, fetal growth affected

I'm a firm believer that women should take it easy when they find out they're pregnant.  Not only does it help at the beginning of pregnancy when the embryo is trying to attach, but, prolonged standing may also affect fetal growth.  Read more:

Study participants were surveyed on their work conditions as well as the physical demands of their jobs, including long working hours, lifting, night shifts, and long periods of standing or walking. In addition, the researchers frequently measured the development of their babies through ultrasound and again at birth.

CAN YOU BE ALLERGIC TO YOUR PREGNANCY?

Severe pregnancy symptoms may be a sign that you're "allergic" to your pregnancy

Excessive vomiting during pregnancy could be a sign of a more severe underlying problem.
Usually women need to be hospitalized to rehydrate and to get some nourishment to by-pass their over-active digestive system.  Although I did not have this problem, I suffered from fairly severe nausea and some vomiting the first three months of my pregnancy. I couldn't go anywhere for the entire first trimester.
This article talks about a woman you had a sever reaction to her pregnancy and how it was like an allergy.  Read more:

Two weeks ago Andrea gave birth to 8lb Kurt and said her baby was worth the ordeal.

She said: 'It was absolute hell from the beginning until the end. But every second was totally worth it for him.'

Andrea started feeling ill when she was around three weeks' pregnant.
Andrea McEwan, 26,was admitted to hospital 10 times during her pregnancy

She said: 'I spent the first month of my pregnancy in hospital. I was admitted about 10 times in total, with the shortest stay two days, and some for longer periods.

'I was just constantly vomiting. I was sick 20 times a day and that was on a good day. I couldn't even drink water. I had to go to hospital to be put on a drip because I was so dehydrated.

'And when I came home it would only be a day or two before I was back in again. It was like an allergic reaction to being pregnant.
