I think most of us know that chromosomal disorders can lead to miscarriage. The disorder I've heard the most about is "trisomy 21" which is an extra 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. Sometimes there may be three copies of chromosome 16, but not in all cells of the body (some have the normal two copies). This is called mosaicism. Symptoms of trisomy 16 mosaicism include:
  • poor growth of the fetus during pregnancy
  • congenital heart defects, such as ventricular septal defect (16% of individuals) or atrial septal defect (10% of individuals)
  • unusual facial features
  • underdeveloped lungs or respiratory tract problems
  • musculoskeletal anomalies
  • urethral opening too low (hypospadias) (7.6% of boys).

Placenta Abruption

You may have heard of a scary condition called abruption of the placenta which can cause miscarriage and can even be fatal to the mother.
This site talks about how the condition can be prevented with good maternal nutrition:

Abruption of the placenta (its premature separation from the wall of the uterus before the baby is born) is one of the most lethal complications in obstetrics. Traumatic abruption is the unfortunate result of an accident in which the mother suffers puncture wounds to the abdomen. This freak occurrence could happen to anyone, well nourished or not. Typically, however, abruption is a severe manifestation of malnutrition. Seen most frequently among the poor, medical literature reports case after case of recurrent abruptions in the same mother. Abruption often accompanies underlying metabolic disease, such as MTLP.



Any degree of abruption is an immediate hazard to the baby's survival. Once the placenta has separated, no oxygen can be transferred to the baby. Toxic wastes soon build up in the baby's tissues. The brain can only survive eight minutes of oxygen deprivation without irreversible damage. Roughly 50 percent of babies die before mothers with this complication can reach the hospital. Immediate delivery is the only treatment. An attempt is made to save the baby if possible, at the same time attention is being given to minimize the internal blood loss and resulting shock which can kill the mother, too.

Nontraumatic abruptions do not occur in well-nourished women. Good nutrition early in pregnancy fosters secure implantation of the placenta on the uterine wall. Continued good nutrition assures that the placenta will grow to meet the demands of the developing baby.

Child Bearing Loss, Miscarriage, Stillbirth - Top 10 Tips for Parents

  1. Be patient with yourself and your partner. Each of you will experience your grief in different ways and often on different timetables. Feelings will vary in intensity and are likely to come in a random fashion, rather than proceeding in a linear manner. Accept the feelings that come without judging them. Recognize the distinctions in how you and your partner experience the grief process and support each other as best you can.
  2. Postpone making any major decisions for at least a year after your loss. Avoid the urge to lose yourself in your work. Permit yourself time to grieve and heal. Although it may seem a tempting distraction, resist the urge to make any immediate, significant change in your life, as it will likely result in additional stress.
  3. Ensure you are eating a healthy diet, getting adequate rest and include some form of exercise in your day, even a short walk in the beginning. Grief takes a great deal of energy. Make sure to drink plenty of water. Avoid drugs and alcohol, which will ultimately cause you to feel worse.
  4. Expect your memory and focus to be off. Thinking of your baby will be foremost on your mind.
  5. Let people know if their well-meant advice or platitudes cause you to feel resentful. Let them know what would be helpful to you.
  6. Let others know how they can be of help. Loved ones wish to help, but often don't know how. Tell them, specifically, what would be helpful, such as: running an errand, walking your dog or simply sitting with you as a quiet companion.
  7. Ask family and friends to mention your baby by name. Most parents long to hear that their baby will be remembered by others.
  8. If you have other children, take time to explain what's happened in simple terms. "The baby was born too tiny to survive," or "The baby was very, very, very, very sick and was not able to get better." Anticipate that they may act out or regress to younger behaviors for a time. Be as patient as possible.
  9. Know that it's okay for your other children to witness your grief. Grief is a part of life and tragically, it has become part of your family's present life. It is healthy to express your sad feelings in front of your children. At the same time, recognize and respect their limits. If you feel as though your pain is interfering with your ability to care for your children, seek outside support. Eventually, grief's overwhelming qualities will begin to recede.
  10. Find a way for your family to remember your baby. He or she will always be a part of you and creating a ritual or place to honor him or her can provide healing. When you feel ready, consider ways to memorialize your baby.


Coping with the loss of your baby is an incredibly difficult task. Accept that there is no 'right' amount of time, nor a time table for grief. Rather, a goal is simply to get through this difficult time. Resist allowing anyone to pressure you into grieving according to their expectations. Coming to term with the loss of your baby can be a life-long process.

Miscarriage, Stillbirth and SIDS Are Devastating

I know how devastating a miscarriage can be.  After experiencing six of them, and finally having a baby, I was really obsessed with whether or not my baby was going to have life threatening problem even after birth.  I was constantly checking on her...was she breathing?  Was she okay?  Even now, I'm a bit overprotective - you can't just switch out of that "doom and gloom" mode of operation.
 I can't even think about how devastating stillbirth or sudden infant death could be on new parents.  Even though most of the literature out there says that the cause of SIDS is unknown, there could be a connection between seritonin levels.  Of course it is recommended to have babies sleep on their back, which has decreased the overall rate of sids in the infant population.

Kinney's team found that serotonin levels were 26 percent lower in tissue from babies who died of SIDS than those who died from other causes and they also found low levels of the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase, which is needed to make serotonin.
The findings suggest that some babies have an underlying vulnerability to SIDS, which can become fatal when combined with an external stress such as sleeping face down, especially when it occurs within the first year of life.
"Our research suggests that sleep unmasks the brain defect," Kinney said in a statement.
"When the infant is breathing in the face-down position, he or she may not get enough oxygen. An infant with a normal brain stem would turn his or her head and wake up in response. But a baby with an intrinsic abnormality is unable to respond to the stressor."
The team hopes the study will lead to a test that measures a baby's serotonin levels, making it possible to identify children at highest risk for SIDS.

Fish oil is a great source for Omega-3 fatty acids. Most of the fats we eat are omega-6 or other types of fat, but cold water fish, nuts, and seeds contain Omega-3 fats. There are literally hundreds of studies and articles in the medical literature documenting the benefits of fish oil supplements. Of course eating a diet that is naturally high in Omega-3 fats is good, but these foods may be high in calories, which are not good for weight issues, or may contain heavy metals or pesticides, which if eaten too often can be harmful. So the literature recommends fish oil supplements for most people. And if you have high triglycerides, high cholesterol, vascular disease, a previous heart attack or stroke, attention deficit disorder, depression, or any inflammatory condition such as arthritis or colitis, fish oil can be a part of your treatment.
How much fish oil do I take? Well, if you are interested in maintaining good health and not treating any particular condition, the answer seems to be at least 1,000-2,000 mg per day of the Omega-3 fats. This dose reduces mortality from heart attacks, and reduces arrhythmias. Now the dosing can be confusing since each fish oil capsule contains 1,000 mg of fish oil but lesser amounts of the Omega-3 fats. To determine the amount of omega-3 content, you must read the fine print on the back label which will tell you how much EPA and DHA are in each 1,000 capsule. EPA and DHA are the specific Omega-3 fats. It will contain "x" amount of EPA and "y" amount of DHA. You must add these 2 numbers together to get the total amount of Omega-3 fats present in each fish oil capsule. If these numbers add to 300, a relatively low amount of omega-3 fats, then it will take 4-7 capsules a day to get at least 1,000-2,000 mg of omega 3 fats. This is the amount needed for those wishing to prevent certain problems long term but not treating any particular condition.
If you are trying to treat a specific condition, you need at least 2,000-7,000 mg a day of Omega- 3 fats. This may require 7-24 caps a day, which is too many for most people. So you must find a fish oil supplement that has more Omega-3 fats than 300 mg per capsule. Occasionally pharmacies such as Walgreens or CVS will carry them, but more often you must go to a health food store, a vitamin store, or find it on the internet. There is also a prescription fish oil called Omacor, which is high in Omega-3 fats, containing 840 mg per capsule of omega-3 fats. Four capsules a day will provide 3360 mg a day and is recommended for lowering triglyceride levels. Some doctors will recommend up to 7,000 mg a day of the Omega-3 fats for certain things, but you should do this only on the advice of a physician familiar with high doses of fish oil. Fish oil does "thin" the blood so that cuts will bleed a little longer than usual, but holding steady pressure on a minor cut for 5-10 minutes usually will stop the bleeding.
It is also important to buy a fish oil that is microfiltered to remove all the heavy metals. Salmon and other cold water fish are near the top of the food chain, and their fat accumulates any toxins, such as heavy metals, that are in the algae or smaller fish that they eat. We accumulate the same toxins in our bodies that we consume, so to avoid this, the fish oils are treated to remove such toxins. Also, salmon, or fish oil derived from farm grown fish, has been shown to have higher levels of pesticide residues from food and fertilizers in the water, so farm derived fish oil should be avoided. Ideally a pharmaceutical grade supplement is best if you choose not to take the prescription form. There are several good such supplements available. Ask your doctor for advice if you are not sure what to purchase.

Restore Estrogen To Normal Levels

I've done much reading on how progesterone helps to maintain a healthy pregnancy.
 However, it appears that estrogen may be another key piece of the equation. Here is an article that tells more:

 Pregnancy Over 40. Miscarriage Over 40 Affected By Men and Women's Alcohol Consumption

Dr. Tine Brink Henriksen, of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark and colleagues followed 430 couples who were attempting a first-time pregnancy. The study participants were all 20 to 35 years old.


A total of 186 pregnancies occurred during the study period, of which 55 ended in spontaneous abortion and 131 resulted in childbirth, the investigators report in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Women who reported consuming 10 or more drinks per week at the time of conception were nearly three times more likely to experience a miscarriage than those who had not consumed any wine, spirits, or beer at the time of conception.

When men consumed 10 or more weekly drinks at the time of conception, their partners’ risk of spontaneous abortion was up to five times greater than it was for women whose male partners did not drink, the report indicates.
